Lowe’s Donates $1 Million to Red Cross Disaster Relief
WASHINGTON, Thursday, September 18, 2008 – Lowe’s Companies, Inc. has donated $1 million to the American Red Cross in response to Hurricane Ike, a storm that has caused upheaval throughout Texas and the Midwest. Teresa Johnson, Lowe’s Regional Vice President of Stores, presented the check to Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern in Houston.
“This hurricane season has been very tough for millions of people throughout the Gulf Coast. Even as media attention moves on, the devastation remains, as does the need for food, shelter and other critical services. We are thankful that Lowe’s recognizes these needs and is helping the Red Cross meet them,” stated McGovern.
“Lowe’s is committed to supporting the causes important to the communities we serve. In times of disaster, there’s no more important cause than providing much-needed relief for our neighbors, customers and employees,” said Teresa Johnson, regional vice president, Lowe’s. “This $1 million donation to the American Red Cross, as well as the money raised through the generosity of Lowe’s customers, will provide storm victims with help in their time of need.”
In addition to their generous $1 million donation, Lowe’s has initiated several means to raise money for Red Cross disaster relief:
- Lowe’s has implemented a customer donation program in all of their 1,575 stores nationwide, which benefits Red Cross relief efforts for all of the 2008 hurricanes. The company will match in-store contributions dollar-for-dollar, up to $250,000.
- Team Lowe’s Racing will implement “Racing for Relief” this weekend at the Dover 400 race at the Dover International Speedway. Jimmie Johnson drives the #48 Lowe’s Impala SS, so for each lap that Johnson completes, Lowe’s will donate $48 to the Red Cross. If Johnson wins the race, Lowe’s will donate an additional $4,800.
- Lowe’s is tagging their commercials with messages to encourage people to donate to the “Hurricanes of 2008” at Lowe’s stores.
Lowe’s has a strong history of partnering with the Red Cross in disaster relief. Since 1999, Lowe’s has raised more than $17.5 million for the nonprofit organization.
Lowe’s is a proud supporter of the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity International, United Way of America, and the Home Safety Council, in addition to numerous non-profit organizations and programs that help communities across the country. In 2007, Lowe’s and the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation together contributed more than $27.5 million to support community and education projects in the United States and Canada. Lowe’s also encourages volunteerism through the Lowe’s Heroes program, a company-wide employee volunteer initiative. Lowe’s is a FORTUNE(R) 50 company with fiscal year 2007 sales of $48.3 billion and has more than 1,575 stores in the United States and Canada. For more information, visit Lowes.com/community.
